Grandma’s Old Fashioned Apple Pudding
This is a simple, old-fashioned baked apple pudding, with a twist: apples on the bottom, soft, cinnamon naan on top.
Ingredients
Apple Base:
- 6 to 8 large tart apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 cup butter, cut into small dabs
Cake Topping
- ¼ cup butter, softened
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ tsp baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- ½ cup whole or 2% milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For Serving
- Panaji Naan
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tbsp sugar + ½ tsp cinnamon (mixed together)
Instructions
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 7x11-inch or medium casserole dish.
- Prepare the apples: Spread the sliced apples in the dish. Drizzle with lemon juice. Sprinkle cinnamon + brown sugar. Dot with butter.
- Make the cake topping: Cream the butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla and beat until light. In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Add dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Stir in the milk just until smooth (do not overmix).
- Assemble: Spread the batter evenly over the apples.
- Bake: 40–50 minutes, until the top is golden and the center is set.
- Prepare the naan while it bakes: Warm naan in the oven for 2–3 minutes. Brush with melted butter. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Cut into strips for dipping.
- Serve the warm pudding with cinnamon sugar naan and ice cream or whipped cream.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve warm with: Vanilla ice cream Lightly sweetened whipped cream Warm vanilla sauce
Notes
- Let the pudding rest 10 minutes — the juices settle and the cake stays soft.
- Granny Smith works best, but any slightly tart apple is fine.
- If your apples are sweet, reduce the brown sugar in the apple layer.
